NDOrtho currently holds an NHS contract with the Clinical Commissioning Group (formerly Devon PCT) to provide a limited number of orthodontic treatments per year. These courses are available to patients under the age of 18 and where treatment will have definite ‘health benefit’ for the patient. Our orthodontists are trained to assess the needs of all patients, based on nationally produced criteria which include: the severity of crowding, presence of impacted teeth, and/or protruding teeth etc. The guidelines all orthodontists use are the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and more details can be found on the British Orthodontic Society Website. Should the patient meet the criteria outlined in the IOTN then they will be eligible for treatment funded by the NHS and treated under NHS regulations.
Should the young patient not qualify under these criteria, their orthodontic situation would be classified as a cosmetic issue and would not qualify for NHS treatment. In this situation several private treatment options are available, each payable in easy to manage installments.
Should you or your child feel that they wish to appeal against the decision not to treat under the NHS, we can advise you on that appeals process.
Usually our NHS patients are referred to NDortho by their general dentist, however if you wish to refer yourself or your child, please fill out the self referral form.
